Abstract: In April 2026, an optimized version of the information platform forschungsdaten.info was released with numerous new features. forschungsdaten.info is hosted and supervised by bwFDM, the state initiative for research data management (RDM) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. In this talk, Maximilian Heber, editor-in-chief of forschungsdaten.info, will briefly introduce the information platform, present the technical innovations and describe how researchers and interested RDM professionals can benefit from them.

Abstract: The Scientific Software Center (SSC), established in fall 2020 at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing of the University of Heidelberg, provides institutional support to researchers of all disciplines in software development and software engineering best practices. The SSC promotes reproducibility and sustainability of research software. The support offered by the SSC is based on the three pillars “Development and Sustainability”, “Teaching and Consultation”, and “Outreach and Communication”.
In this talk, we will share how RSE support is organized at the SSC and how the different offers are received. Two examples of SSC-supported projects will be highlighted.
The SSC employs predominantly generalist but also embedded research software engineers, where generalists work on RSE projects of all disciplines, and embedded research software engineers are focused on RSE projects in their home domain. Often, the research software engineers work on multiple projects, making effective project and time management essential. Being located at a German university brings its own additional administrative challenges related to the recognition of RSE as academic discipline and academic work contracts. We will discuss these aspects and summarize the learnings of more than five years of RSE support.

Abstract: NFDI4Earth combines the expertise and services of more than 65 institutions from research, universities, and government agencies to make research data management in Earth system sciences FAIR, open, and sustainable. The talk gives a practical overview of the NFDI4Earth initiative and its services. It shows, using OneStop4All, how researchers can access data, services, learning materials, and other resources through a single, central point of entry. The talk also introduces the User Support Network – an alliance of institutional and interdisciplinary support structures that assists researchers with searching, integrating, documenting, and providing long-term access to research data. Participants receive a brief introduction to NFDI4Earth’s key services and learn how they can use them in their research, and how they can get involved themselves. The talk closes with a brief outlook on future developments and planned services. Questions and open discussion with other participants are explicitly welcome.

Abstract: The vision of NFDI4DataScience (NFDI4DS) is to support all steps of the complex and interdisciplinary research data lifecycle, including collecting/creating, processing, analyzing, publishing, archiving, and reusing resources in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Our digital artefacts include scholarly articles, models, scripts/code and workflows. We offer a range of services with different levels of maturity. The talk gives an overview of our service portfolio.

Abstract: NFDI4Microbiota, as a consortium within the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), is committed to transforming microbiological research by making data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and open. We support the full spectrum of microbiological data, originating from individual microorganisms to study their genetic and metabolic characteristics to complex microbiomes including interactions with hosts and environments. In this talk, we will present NFDI4Microbiota’s comprehensive service spectrum, which supports researchers throughout the entire research life cycle. This includes our services ranging from tools to generate data management plans, electronic lab notebooks, the storage solutions Aruna, the data processing platforms CloWM and much more. We will also highlight our training program, designed to empower scientists with the skills and knowledge needed to handle microbiological data and supporting tools efficiently.

Abstract: The Digitalverbund Bayern project “Cross-University IT Service for Research Data Management” (HITS FDM) is tasked with building and piloting statewide RDM services in Bavaria. Since July 1, 2025, the development project has been jointly based at FAU and TH Nürnberg, in order to support universities as well as universities of applied sciences (HAW) across Bavaria as equally and as effectively as possible. The Free State of Bavaria is funding the project for a period of three years.
The core tasks of HITS FDM include support and networking for internal university advisory offices as well as initially providing four RDM services throughout Bavaria: Research Data Management Organizer (RDMO), a registration service for DOIs & other PIDs, FDOrganizer, and the metadata generator, DataCite. Further services which are based on the needs of the universities are currently being prepared.

Abstract: The FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) are becoming increasingly important in catalysis research.
OpenBIS, as an electronic lab notebook, offers a powerful platform for this purpose. This presentation shows how catalytic research data can be stored in a FAIR-compliant manner through structured data models and metadata capture. It focuses on the reusability of the data in collaborative or subsequent projects.

Abstract: This talk introduces the “IT for Research and Management” (IFM) department of the Medical Center for Information and Communication Technology (MIK) at Uniklinikum Erlangen (UKER). IFM offers a broad range of services for researchers at UKER and supports collaborative projects involving UKER. One focus of our work is providing data from routine clinical care for research purposes through our clinical data warehouse (DWH) and the Data Integration Center (DIZ). Since 2024, we have also been building a team for research data management (RDM) to support researchers at Uniklinikum Erlangen with this complex topic. In this talk, we will take a closer look at our RDM team in particular.

Abstract: The presentation addresses the growing importance of research data management (RDM) in the social sciences and shows how researchers can meet the associated challenges in this field. RDM is becoming increasingly relevant, as it helps ensure the reproducibility of research, prevent data loss, and enable the reuse of data. The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) brings together key resources for this purpose, strengthening the infrastructure for social science research. Within the NFDI, the Consortium for the Social, Educational, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (KonsortSWD – NFDI4Society) addresses the specific requirements of the social, educational, behavioral, and economic sciences. The presentation introduces the support services offered by KonsortSWD, which assist researchers in the technical and content-related implementation of RDM – particularly in handling sensitive data. These include assistance throughout the entire data life cycle, measures for legally and ethically secure data provision, and improvements to the interoperability and visibility of research data. Finally, the presentation offers insights into the data holdings of the research data centers accredited by RatSWD and shows how these are supported and made reusable through KonsortSWD.

Abstract: Manually curating metadata is often caught between the competing demands of simplicity and detail. Metadata standards such as Dublin Core are widely used but are often not context-sensitive enough for reusing research data effectively. This presentation introduces a contextually extended, modularly structured metadata model specifically developed for the (semi-)automated generation of metadata using generative AI.

Abstract: The German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA) is establishing a secure and scalable national infrastructure to unlock the potential of human omics data for research. As part of the National Research Data Infrastructure Germany (NFDI) and the federated European Genome-phenome Archive (FEGA), GHGA plays a key role in a collaborative European network driving responsible human genetics research, personalized healthcare, and evidence-based health policy.
Here, we emphasize Germany’s approach to develop sustainable, cutting-edge data infrastructures that operate within a robust ethico-legal framework. This ensures that omics data is managed in a secure, data protection-compliant, and FAIR manner, balancing openness with responsibility.
Through cloud-based infrastructure at the GHGA Data Hubs, GHGA provides secure, controlled access to raw and processed sequence data.
In my talk I will outline the institutional and legal setup of GHGA and explain how Omics data can be submitted to and requested via GHGA.

Abstract: Local data hubs (LDH) store and exchange metadata on projects, studies, publications, and (bio)medical data, models, and software tools from the field of health research, based on the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). In the LDH, detailed, supplementary resources such as study protocols, data sets, references to publications, repositories, registers, and analysis platforms are linked and presented in context. Organizational units, contact persons and authors, sponsors and funding programs, presentations and studies, and much more can be linked and searched. Access to these resources can be granted as public, for a group, only locally, or for a few individuals, potentially rendering existing, in-house heterogeneous data and project portals superfluous. The project is powered by the established FAIRDOM SEEK tool which is supported and optimized by NFDI4Health together with the international community.

Abstract: The documentation of (laboratory) experiments has traditionally taken place on paper, even though this no longer seems appropriate for the times. Digitizing this documentation is a long overdue step, especially since data acquisition for most experiments has long since taken place on the computer and paper lab notebooks lead to media discontinuity.
In order to facilitate the transition to electronic lab notebooks, the CDI at FAU offers a wide range of support services, such as consulting, free test instances, and hosting ELNs.

Abstract: NFDI4ING has represented engineering within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) since 2020. Within this community, it promotes data literacy through training, materials, and teaching concepts, supports the improvement of procedures through data standards and quality assurance, and develops services in the form of both local and centrally hosted infrastructure solutions. Archetypes based on shared methods guide the development of these cross-cutting solutions. In its second funding phase, NFDI4ING will focus on developing infrastructure for creating and storing FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs), which will be interlinked within a knowledge graph. To achieve this goal, it will further open up its infrastructure and strengthen its interaction with the community. The talk provides an overview of NFDI4ING’s activities, services, and concepts for research data management, along with a perspective on future developments.

Abstract: WissKI is a system which allows researchers to record data about objects of cultural heritage, producing FAIR Linked Open Data.
Objects in WissKI have two representations, an informal relational-database-like representation as well as a formal RDF-based representation. WissKI end users work in the first representation while the system works in the second; the two are aligned using what is known as a “pathbuilder”. TIPSY – short for Tom’s Inspector for Pathbuilders – is an inspector and visualizer for WissKI pathbuilders. This talk gives an introduction on how to model data using a WissKI pathbuilder, and how the resulting pathbuilder can be visualized using TIPSY.

Abstract: A core objective of the DataPLANT consortium is to foster FAIR data management, collaboration, and data publication to drive the cultural shift toward Open Science. To achieve this, the consortium is developing a science gateway and tools and services to assist with daily routines. They serve as a technical foundation that applies software engineering- inspired approaches to handling both data and computational workflows, making them broadly accessible to plant researchers. Conceptually, DataPLANT promotes the Annotated Research Context (ARC) — a framework designed for organizing and documenting research data and metadata annotation while acting as a container that continuously facilitates collaboration, data exchange, and adherence to FAIR principles among researchers throughout the entire data life cycle.

Abstract: FAIRmat is the NFDI consortium dedicated to establishing a FAIR data infrastructure for condensed matter physics. Its central tool is the NOMAD hub. Since it began as a repository for computational materials-science data, NOMAD’s functionality has been significantly expanded. Not only has its computational support been extended to excited-state calculations from many-body theories, and classical molecular-dynamics simulations, it has also become a platform for various experimental data. These advances have been achieved through FAIRmat´s development of data models and tools to process and describe the plethora of heterogeneous data available in materials science. Today, NOMAD contains 13 million entries from all over the world, representing more than 3 million materials. I will present emerging strategies to extend the NOMAD concept to a broader spectrum of experimental physics, among which data harmonization plays a central role.

Abstract: Community Annotated Trial Search (CATS) is an innovative, interoperable platform for the efficient management of trial information in the field of precision oncology. CATS semi-automatically integrates data from established trial information systems such as clinicaltrials.gov and the German Clinical Trials Registry (DRKS). Terminologies, such as LOINC or SNOMED, can be used and integrated in CATS to store and filter study information. This semantic interoperability enables the combination of inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as (molecular) biomarkers to support personalized search for end users as well as automated algorithms, such as Clinical Decision Support for Molecular Tumor Boards (MTB). In addition, the platform enables effective filtering of clinical trials that goes beyond clinical characteristics to include local proximity searches.

SODa is an ongoing joint project that implements this mission for scientific object collections at universities and colleges; FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is involved through its Collections and Museums unit, the FAU CDI, the Pattern Recognition Lab, and the Chair of Computer Science for Visual Computing. This talk will address the data management competencies SODa provides for research with collections, the services offered by the center, and the specific requirements arising from scientific collection work – including designing infrastructure.

Concrete examples will illustrate how Labfolder simplifies everyday research, what pitfalls may arise, and where the system’s limitations lie. The talk closes with a compact comparison of three solutions: Labfolder, openBIS, and eLabFTW.

However, merely digitizing paper-based lab notebooks forecloses many of the possibilities offered by electronic lab notebooks, for example with regard to search functions, traceability, and the reuse of research data. Using a few simple experiments, the talk aims to demonstrate the possibilities of structured data acquisition and the resulting options by way of example.

Abstract: Galaxy is an open-source platform that allows researchers to analyze and share scientific data using interoperable APIs and various user-friendly web-based interfaces. The Galaxy project was launched in 2005 and has since become a powerful tool for researchers across a wide range of research fields, including *omics, biodiversity, machine learning, cheminformatics, NLP, material science, climate research.
One of the key features of the Galaxy platform is its emphasis on transparency, reproducibility, and reusability. Galaxy is a multi-user environment which facilitates sharing of e.g. tools, workflows, notebooks, visualizations, and data with others. This makes it particularly easy to reproduce results in order to verify their correctness and enable other researchers to build upon them in future studies. All provenance information of a dataset, including version of used tools, parameters, execution environment are captured and can be reused or exported using standards like BCO or RO-Crate to public archives.

Abstract: Coscine is a research data management (RDM) platform that is operated and developed at RWTH Aachen University. In addition to a state-wide initiative in NRW, Coscine is also being developed and used within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), particularly in NFDI4Ing and NFDIMatWerk Researchers from all disciplines can create projects in Coscine, gain access to storage resources, and store data together with its associated metadata. Metadata is captured using application profiles. Low-threshold access via ORCID and a flexible role system enable all project members to collaborate across institutions. Depending on the storage system used, data and metadata can be archived for ten years after a project concludes, in line with good scientific practice. To support sound research data management throughout the active project phase, Coscine facilitates compliance with the FAIR principles by bundling research data, metadata, interfaces, and PIDs into a linked dataset based on the “FAIR Digital Objects” model. Coscine’s functions are accessible both through the web interface and via APIs, enabling automated workflows. The talk will provide an overview of the platform’s core functions.

Abstract: NFDI4Objects focuses on the material heritage of around three million years of human and environmental history. Within Task Area 6 “Qualification, Integration & Harmonization,” FAU CDI addresses the data management requirements of multidisciplinary data evaluation processes, develops and maintains NFDI4Objects’ own commons, and creates tailored training programs. A central task is developing concepts for the semantic harmonization of object descriptions emerging from the various subject areas within the NFDI4Objects community. Integration, comparability, interoperability, and data reusability are to be achieved primarily through the use of ontologies and metadata schemas. Sarah Wagner’s talk offers a workshop-style look into FAU CDI’s current tasks and developments for NFDI4Objects, focusing on the semantic knowledge representation of objects and their contexts. To better understand the needs and requirements of object documentation, the talk also explores historical documentation practices and current debates in the field.

Abstract: The virtual research environment FuD (https://fud.uni-trier.de) was originally developed at the University of Trier as part of Collaborative Research Center 600, “Foreignness and Poverty,” and is now used successfully across numerous projects spanning a wide range of disciplines. Among other things, it enables the digital edition of sources – such as letters and works – in a straightforward way and is continuously expanded with new features. The talk presents FuD through selected research projects as examples, while also addressing current adaptations and further developments.

Abstract: At the Department of Physics at FAU, we introduced and piloted electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) several years ago in the compulsory fourth-semester course “Physics Experiments A: Electronics Lab.” The benefits are obvious: all data and metadata – including preparation, experiment descriptions, experimental observations, and results – are stored digitally in one central location. Students within a lab group have joint access to their data, both at the university and from home, and actively collaborate in the shared electronic lab notebook. Drawing on the Python skills acquired in their first semester, students use scripts to access their lab notebook data for analysis. Lab supervisors and tutors can also view the data, enabling detailed scientific discussions with students and allowing for valuable guidance during the analysis phases. With the introduction of eLabFTW as a university-wide ELN service by the FAU Competence Center for Research Data and Information (FAU-CDI), we transitioned the Electronics Lab to eLabFTW from the previously used ELN system, openBIS. In this presentation, we show how eLabFTW can be configured for use in the lab course, allowing students to start using the ELN without any barriers to entry. We also demonstrate data access within the ELN for data evaluation and visualization, and offer a perspective on new possibilities for the practical course arising from ELN use.

Abstract: Prof. Michael Beurskens and Prof. Stefanie Scherzinger provide an overview of the legal protection of research data from an interdisciplinary perspective. Combining aspects of law and computer science, they illuminate the complex relationships between the parties involved – from professors and student assistants to third-party funders and universities – distinguishing between the protection of research data, its structure, and the program code used for data processing. The talk aims not only to raise awareness of the topic’s complexity but also to highlight specific challenges, such as those arising during institutional transitions. Finally, the speakers present open questions and promising avenues for future research.

Abstract: Metadata play a central role on the rocky road to FAIR research data – and ideally, the metadata themselves should also be FAIR wherever possible. Using metadata standards is one way to achieve this: such standards can define the formal structure of metadata as a whole – for example, how individual elements are arranged – while also specifying rules for what information those elements should contain and in what form. Abstract: LARA (gitlab.com/larasuite) is an open source Research Data Management Suite and 2nd generation Electronic Lab Notebook with the goal to automate most of the data and
metadata entering process by providing a rich infrastructure for lab communication, orchestration, data/metadata storage, evaluation and exchange. It utilizes ontology-based semantic
web technology to make data findable via SPARQL. LARA is designed to reduce manual data entry by humans to the bare minimum, since scientists should focus on the creative part
of their research (“no one likes to enter data by hand, if a machine can do it”). This is achieved by a very fine grained, gRPC based API, SiLA lab device communication and a semantic, ontology-based representation of most items. A SPARQL endpoint is integrated into the suite and intuitive synchronisation between LARA instances is currently under development.

Abstract: FAIRmat is a consortium of the NFDI (National Research Data Infrastructure Germany). We provide the condensed-matter physics and chemical physics of solids community with the infrastructure, tools, and knowledge to make their research data FAIR. In this talk I will give an introduction to FAIRmat and its main software NOMAD. After an introduction to the consortia and a history of NOMAD there will be an interactive live demo where I will show how NOMAD can be used as a structured electronic lab notebook (ELN).
Finally, I will show how the ELN can be customized directly by the user and show a few example use cases.

Abstract: As part of the NFDI initiative (Nationale Forschungsdaten Infrastruktur – National Research Data Infrastructure) of the German Research Foundation, NFDI4Energy aims to foster communication and exchange of data and software in energy systems research. We will introduce the overall goals of the initiative and also show the specific goals, challenges, and planned services of NFDI4Energy. FAU will coordinate the Task Area “Simulation in Interdisciplinary Energy Research” in the consortium. The overall goal of this task area is to better support the use of simulations in the energy field for both experts and interested non-experts. For many advanced research questions, it is necessary to perform distributed simulations. Therefore, an important goal is to better support the execution of distributed simulations by offering Simulation-as-a-Service with the NFDI4Energy platform as a front-end. We will show concepts
and first steps towards this goal.

Abstract: Large exhibitions in museums are often preceded by lengthy research phases, the results of which are typically incorporated into a catalog. In the past, however, all other research data was often inadequately preserved and, after some time, frequently became completely inaccessible. Digital indexing and preservation of this data began to seem like a viable new solution for safeguarding such holdings and keeping them available for future research, thanks to the technical possibilities available since the 1990s. The development of the virtual research environment WissKI by FAU, GNM, and the Museum Koenig, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), created an ontology-based, web-enabled method for object documentation that also provides Linked (Open) Data, among other features. This talk will present ideas behind the design of WissKI, its initial implementation, and some early applications.

Abstract: Since 2020, the Institute of Radiology has been building a research infrastructure for image data-focused research projects, with a particular focus on training deep learning algorithms using large volumes of image data. The colloquium will present the current status of this infrastructure and provide a detailed look at the tools employed. The use of this infrastructure will also be demonstrated through practical application examples.

Abstract: Four years ago, the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) was established with a great deal of political momentum. It now comprises 27 subject-specific consortia funded by the DFG. The DFG and the Joint Science Conference (GWK) expect the NFDI to systematically develop, sustainably secure, and make accessible the data holdings of science and research, and open up national and international access to data. However, achieving these ambitious goals requires a radical rethink of how data is managed in science. Instead of isolated data silos, scientific data and the services built around it must become publicly available in order to generate substantially greater added value. Since we regard data as a common good and want to make the best possible use of it for the scientific community and society at large, we advocate the concept of a “Research Data Commons” (RDC). This commons approach is based on the idea that resources are best used when managed in a collaborative and participatory manner.
In this talk, I will outline the architecture of the RDC, with particular focus on the importance of cross-cutting monitoring and governance.
I will also present initial examples of how the RDC is currently being implemented within the NFDI4Biodiversity consortium.

Abstract: The FAIR principles require much more than merely digitizing lab notebooks. Reusable, dialog-capable research data require the structured recording of data and metadata. Ideally, data is structured using standards from the respective research fields; these standards are currently being developed within the NFDI consortia- Only in this way can third parties understand data and reproduce experiments, or can AI systems gain new insights from linking different datasets.
At the Chair of Applied Physics, we have analyzed and modeled our research workflows. As a digital platform for our research data, we use the open-source software NOMAD Oasis, which is being developed within the NFDI consortium FAIRmat. Among other things, NOMAD Oasis is a “schema-first” electronic lab notebook (ELN). The schema definition also supports inheritance, so that specialized schemas can be derived from more general classes. Individual schema extensions allow the flexible ad hoc addition of annotated data fields. Based on these schemas, NOMAD Oasis interprets data files, indexes data for search functionality, and provides web forms for the ELN functionality.
In experimental condensed matter physics (and other research fields), there is a further challenge: capturing metadata as completely as possible in specialized, ad hoc experiments. Such experiments are set up individually for the respective scientific question, using a wide variety of measuring instruments. For control and data acquisition, we are developing the open-source software NOMAD CAMELS at the Chair of Applied Physics as part of the FAIRmat consortium. This software allows the flexible definition of measurement sequences via a graphical user interface and handles the control of the measuring devices as well as the automated, complete documentation of the recorded data, including all metadata accessible to the computer. Our goal is low-threshold usage without programming knowledge, thereby relieving the burden on scientists. At the same time, however, CAMELS is scalable for use in large, distributed measurement systems.
