Research data census

2020 research data census

To correctly assess the needs of researchers at FAU, the Research Data and Research Information working group (predecessor of the CDI) carried out a survey among all heads of organizational units. A total of 99 responses from all faculties were received and evaluated. As a university that offers the entire spectrum of academic disciplines, FAU also covers the entire range of research data, since it deals with all types of data, and the size of datasets varies from a few megabytes to several hundred terabytes.

The following fields of action arise from the responses to the survey:

  • Cost-effective storage for the project phase and for backups and archiving
  • General need for advice for dealing with research data
  • Advice on data curation, specific technical and legal questions
  • Availability of suitably qualified personnel for research data management and software development.

Activities that provide support for solving these issues are provided by the CDI. The census will be repeated in 2023.
